Forming a Life Resolution

Our resolutions can leave us discouraged when we have not had a heart change first. Last week, Pastor John revealed the need for resolutions to be more of a life change than just a temporary behavioral change. When we want our resolutions to stick, we need to seek God first.

Submit plans to God

It is in our minds that we form our plans, but it is in laying these plans down before God that we actually can succeed at them:

Proverbs 16:3 (NIV):

"Commit to the Lord whatever you do, and he will establish your plans."

Trust His Purposes

Sometimes our plans will go through a massive transformation. When we let go of micromanaging what God does with our plans, we begin to see that His purposes are vastly superior to ours:

Proverbs 19:21 (NIV)

"Many are the plans in a person's heart, but it is the LORD's purpose that prevails."

Consult God's Word

Like Jesus who grew in wisdom, we need to be in God's word to grow in wisdom, too. We have to be people in God's word to live by His word. This is our greatest resolution. To draw near to our kind, loving God. I am doing a daily Bible Reading plan that you are invited to join in. Being in His word shapes all of our plans, too. And our mindset is changed as His word changes us from within. And as we lay down the control we think we have, God's will is done in our lives. No greater calling than that!

Proverbs 3:5-6 (NIV)

"Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make straight your paths."

Know Your Motives

Do our goals seek our own glory, or God's? Knowing the What and Why of our goals matters. This month we are doing the Wesley Challenge. Don't let yourself just be stuck in status quo. Let's keep growing in wisdom and grace this year!
